Entry #3 Marijuana and The Brain
The Effects of Cannabis (Marijuana) on the Brain & Body | Huberman Lab Podcast #92
Hello from one side of the digital world to the other! It is your host Jason Morales, once again ready to indulge you with the latest podcast of my favorite doctor, Dr. Andrew Huberman.
It would appear that as this class progresses, a new podcast that can directly correlate to our class assignments appears as well! Today I will be discussing the slanted view within Dr. Huberman recent podcast that discusses the effects of cannabis on the developing brain as well as the developed brian.
While the podcast in itself doesn’t directly say to not consume marijuana during the developmental stages of the forebrain – until the age of 25 – there are many rhetorical devices employed by Dr. Huberman that make a strong suggestion against the consumption of marijuana until the age previously mentioned. Two of the podcast's strongest rhetorical devices used are ethos and logos. Within the podcast Dr. Huberman calls to many studies conducted that while acknowledging the benefits of cbd within cannabis also, point to the negative outcomes such as an increased percentage of individuals who through heavy consumption develop neurological disorders such as psychosis (caused by thc) and even schizophrenia. In the same podcast the acknowledgement of widespread use of marijuana is noted and so to ease the brunt of the news that marijuana has negative effects, Dr. Huberman integrates credibility with acknowledging his own studies that suggest that this may only occur if there is a history of neurological disorders in said individuals' families. It is also made clear on many occasions that Dr. Huberman is not trying to take away from all of the benefits attributed to marijuana, but simply also addressing the lesser known disadvantages that may be present within the over-consumption of it.
Overall, Dr. Huberman makes tried to make the podcasts on the advantages and disadvantages of marijuana on the brain both developed and undeveloped as unbiased as possible, but through his use of rhetoric the stance that marijuana should not be overconsumed, especially by the youth, is very prevalent and dominant.
